SpeedSeal Installation Instructions

Installation instructions:

1. Close the seacock (sea water inlet valve).
2. Remove the existing pump screws and cover.
3. Clean the pump flange face thoroughly. Remove all traces of gasket material, grease, burrs and corrosion, so as to ensure a proper seal for the new ‘O’ ring. Apply a layer of the supplied glycerine lubricant to the pump flange face.
4. Remove the impeller’s centre rubber bung (if fitted).
5. Lubricate the threads of all four 316 stainless thumbscrews.
6. Screw two thumbscrews halfway into the two lowest threaded holes in the pump flange face.
7. Lubricate all sides of the PTFE washer and the naval brass washer. Place the PTFE washer inside the cover, then place the naval brass washer on top.
8. Lubricate the ‘O’ ring and fit it in the groove in the naval brass cover. Or on versions with an ‘O’ ring in the pump flange face, remove and discard the old ‘O’ ring, clean out the groove, lubricate and fit the new ‘O’ ring.
9. Orientate the assembled cover with the two slots at the bottom and slide the cover downwards over the two partially fitted thumbscrews on the pump body. Install the remaining two thumbscrews and tighten lightly.
10. Tighten the thumbscrews evenly by hand, starting with any screw and then the one diagonally opposite. Repeat with the other pair of thumbscrews, and continue in this X-pattern until all four are hand tight. Do not use a screwdriver! The slot is ONLY for freeing a stuck screw, NOT for tightening.
11. Job done, so open the seacock, start the engine and check for leaks.
12. Keep the tube of glycerine and the pair of impeller removal levers in your toolbox. The glycerine is very useful for lubricating and protecting rubber components generally. The two levers have been specially designed to remove an impeller quickly and most importantly without damaging the flanged face of the pump.
